Our Border Collies here on the Bergen Ranch carry the best bloodlines in the world and must be able to handle cattle, horses, sheep and even chickens. They need to be able to handle cows with little calves, or raunchy old spoiled cows and to know the difference between extreme pressure, or back off and wait out the situation. Cows with young calves cannot be pressured by a dog without bringing out that ‘fight or die trying’ instinct which will simply get their calves hurt. If the dog simply stands at a certain distance the cow will eventually pick up her calf and take it out of the danger zone. Our old stud dog "Whip" has successfully handled horses, cattle, sheep, ducks, rheas, ostriches, elk, buffalo, deer and helped to herd in 4000 head of reindeer on the Tuck Peninsula in the Canadian North West Territories.
