The following is a write up April 11 1960 from, I believe, The Western Producer, anyhow it was taken from the Pendleton Ore. (AP).
From Ear To Hoof
‘Curly” Horses Bred In Oregon
PENDLETON Ore. (AP) – A band of horses liberally covered from ear to hoof with curls is yielding a new breed of horse – the Pendeltonian.
C.A. (Buzz) Wolf said Sunday he first noticed the curly animals 15 years ago running wild in the remote Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon.
Wolf said he and a neighbor, Virgil Bronson, then started going regularly into the mountains to keep track of the wild ponies. They separated out from the rest of the band the bad ones and the ones lacking curls. Eventually they caught a stallion and a couple of mares.
Now they have started breeding these curly horses and have perfected it to where a curly mare and a curly stallion yield a curly foal every time.
The animals are about the size of a large Shetland.
They are covered with about one inch of curly hair the year around. The Appaloosa horse also has a curly main and tail, but nothing like these animals, an observer said.
Wolf said the animals are a crossbreed from thoroughbred, Appaloosa and cayuse.
The cayuse, or mustang is the old Indian pony, a sturdy animal that has been wild in this area for centuries,
Wolf said the Pendeltonian is easy to train and handle.
